The popular messaging service, Discord has piqued the interest of many large companies, such as Microsoft and Amazon, for over $10 Billion dollars. Today I go over the pros and cons of a buyout, and give you what I think this means for the company if it is bought out. BackgroundFor context, Discord, a social media of sorts that lets users chat with others through the use of servers, could be bought out by Microsoft, one of the big tech giants of the modern day world. Discord isn't even worth $10 Billion dollars, as its only source of revenue is its "Nitro" subscription to gain access to features such as HD streaming, custom emotes, and larger upload limits. This technically means Discord isn't "profitable", and I use that term lightly. Discord doesn't make enough money to recuperate the costs of owning all the technology used. However, Discord uses Cloud services, and doesn't have to pay as much. Pros:The main pros from Discord are from two things:
Cons: (Here we go)The numerous amount of Cons to getting bought out has to do with Microsoft's treatment of another similar messaging service; Skype. Skype was bought by Microsoft on May 2011, and has essentially been forgotten. Yes, people still use Skype, but not as many do today. Many fear that Discord may go down the same path. Another thing to point out is that Microsoft is kind of about exclusivity; from its consoles to its games, Microsoft might not want Discord to be available everywhere, and they can change where Discord is available if they buy it. Other points mentioned are:
ConclusionTo be honest, there is points on either side, and the side to be on is your choice. I personally lean against it slightly. Even if there is a conclusion to this issue, it will certainly make one side frustrated. But no matter what side you are on, Discord will make the right decision to expand their company.
